Endurance is a ministry which provides faith based resources to help meet the emotional and spiritual needs of suffering people, especially those who suffer from cancer or amputation.

The vision of Endurance is three-fold :

  • To continue the ministry of encouragement to those suffering from cancer, amputation, or serious illness and to perform that ministry with integrity and excellence.
  • To encourage and train Christians to respond as Christ did to those who are hurting by making Endurance's ministry model of encouragement available through multimedia resources and seminars.
  • To come alongside health professionals and provide resources for them and their patients that deal with the emotional and spiritual aspects of living with cancer, amputation, or serious illness.

Endurance provides resources that offer guidance and encouragement to cancer patients, amputees and their families, and others dealing with serious illness. The Encourager magazine is the organization's primary resource for communicating encouragement and hope. It is sent free of charge to thousands of hurting individuals and their families, churches, cancer organizations and health professionals. Each issue, which comes out three times per year, deals with a theme directly relating to the struggles of those living with affliction. In addition, books, pamphlets and gifts are available to meet the unique needs of those who suffer, including resources for caregivers, children and support persons.

Endurance also offers prayer support for those who suffer and their families through our intercessory prayer teams. Connecting people to God through prayer is at the heart of what the organization does and believes. Only God can meet the deepest needs of those who hurt.

In addition, Professional Support Materials are available for churches, health professionals, cancer support groups, and individuals who work with those who suffer, especially those who suffer from cancer, amputation, or serious illness. Resources range from a Cancer Support Group packet to Resource Library materials to Guidelines on Praying For Those Who Suffer.

Dave Dravecky delivers inspirational and motivational speeches to a wide variety of audiences across the country. Through his personal experience, he addresses loss and suffering, faith, encouragement and hope, reaching out to others, and saying goodbye to the past. Jan Dravecky also shares her story of walking alongside Dave, experiencing the heights and depths of joy and despair, faith and doubt, intimacy and aloneness during his battle with cancer and the subsequent amputation of his pitching arm. While in the midst of their journey, Jan found herself fighting a crippling depression that refused to lift. She shares her own "comeback" story with honesty and candor, providing a glimpse of how Jan went from being a "woman in control" to a woman under God's control.

Mission statement

Endurance offers provision through the journey of suffering. We accomplish this as we:

  • Offer comfort by validating the emotional, relational and spiritual challenges encountered on the journey of suffering
  • Offer encouragement through a Biblical perspective of suffering.
  • Offer the ultimate hope found only in Jesus Christ.

Statement of faith

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

We believe that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14

We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that by voluntary disobedience, fell from perfection.

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned- Romans 5:12

We believe that spiritual death, pain and suffering are a result of that fall.

To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." Genesis 3:16-19

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His atoning death and His bodily resurrection.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. John 1:1-2

You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Luke 1:31-35

Such a high priest meets our need-one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. Hebrews 7:26-27

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you." Matthew 28:5-7

We believe that it is through faith in Jesus Christ alone that man finds forgiveness for his sins and receives the gift of eternal life.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Shortly after realizing his lifelong dream of being a major league baseball pitcher-a "southpaw" for the San Francisco Giants-Dave Dravecky was diagnosed with a soft tissue cancer in the deltoid muscle of his pitching arm. After surgeons cut and removed a section of his deltoid muscle, Dave was told that outside of a miracle, he would never pitch again. Unwilling to give up his dream, he fought back-and fought back hard. Just nine months after surgery, Dave once again stepped onto the mound to pitch a winning game for the Giants. Our excitement of his comeback ended just five days later when Dave's arm broke in mid-pitch. The next years were a whirlwind of surgery, radiation, pain, depression, and eventually amputation-all in the glaring light of the media. It was a lonely, agonizing journey-more difficult than we ever could have imagined. We experienced the heights and depths of joy and despair, faith and doubt, intimacy and loneliness. But our journey of suffering was not hopeless. Through it we discovered the power of endurance-not in our own ability, but in the comfort, encouragement and hope that God provides.
