At Liebenzell, we believe that the Good News of Jesus Christ is a beneficial and life-changing force for every person, culture and nation. Our job is to live and pass on this truth by mobilizing and equipping missionaries and their senders to reach the ends of the earth.

Today there are over seven billion people in the world. Only one-third of the people on earth confess to be Christians, and many of those hunger for teaching and discipleship. Jesus Christ gave His Church the mandate to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything He commanded (Matthew 28:18-20). Liebenzell is committed to this task. We labor to disciple the nations in 26 countries around the world.

We are compelled to world mission by the great love God has shown to us. He desires that all hear the Good News - and we want to be the feet to bring it!

Mission statement

The Joshua project estimates there are approximately 17,000 people groups on earth. Thanks to the amazing work of missionaries past, there are now only 963 people groups unreached. This could be the generation that sees the Gospel message reach every tribe, tongue and nation.

As a mission organization dedicated to serving God passionately and sharing Christ personally locally and worldwide, Liebenzell USA has heard the call to reach the people of the world with God's love.

Statement of faith

We believe that the whole Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and is the Divine authority and infallible rule for faith, life and doctrine.

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, equal in nature, power and glory.

We believe in the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His shed blood as the only atonement for sin, in His bodily resurrection and ascension to the right hand of the Father and in His personal return in power and glory.

We believe in the Holy Spirit who convicts of sin, testifies of Christ, enables the believer to live a victorious life, and guides into all truth.

We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin and is in need of regeneration through faith in Jesus Christ.

We believe in the resurrection of the body. The believer will arise to eternal life, the unbeliever will arise to eternal condemnation.

We believe in the Spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe in the commission of the Risen Christ, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:19,20).

We uphold the truths as stated in the Nicene and Apostles' Creeds.

In the late 1800s, Hudson Taylor traveled throughout Europe, garnering support for the work of the China Inland Mission. In Germany, news of Taylor's work so excited Rev. Heinrich Coerper that he founded the German Support Branch of the China Inland Mission in 1899. The little society grew quickly, sending out its first missionary to Hunan province within a year. In 1902, the mission was given a new home in the Black Forest town of Bad Liebenzell - and thus became Liebenzell Mission.

The work grew rapidly and spread to other fields in Asia and the Pacific: Manus Island, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Japan and Palau. By the 1930's, over 80 missionaries were involved in full time ministry overseas. The outbreak of World War II disrupted the work as missionaries were expelled, imprisoned or killed. In the late 1930s, a missionary couple returning to ministry in China became stranded in America as war broke out in Europe and Asia. Henry and Anna Zimmermann united several small groups of faithful mission supporters in the U.S. and founded Liebenzell USA in 1941. They purchased an old mansion and farm in rural northwestern New Jersey to welcome displaced German missionaries arriving in America, seeking refuge from the war. Within ten years, the first U.S. missionary was sent out to Manus Island, Papua New Guinea; others soon followed, continuing the Mission's work in PNG and Micronesia.

Liebenzell's work expanded to Taiwan when missionaries were forced to leave China in the early 1950s. Over the last 30 years, Liebenzell has entered new fields of service in Africa, Europe, and South America. Today about 240 career missionaries serve with Liebenzell Mission International through its seven independent branches. Many more short-term volunteers also assist in taking the Gospel to all the world.
