Mission statement
Our mission at Grand Haven Christian School is to educate minds and shape hearts for service to God in His world.
Statement of faith
Grand Haven Christian School is committed to Jesus Christ and seeks to teach and live out our historic Christian faith through a Reformed lens. We honor the home-church-school relationship which places the primary source of influence and guidance upon the parent(s) in the home.
The theological doctrines included in this document provide clarity for teachers, parents and staff on these matters and as a statement of our commitment to provide students with a distinctly Christian education.
God's Word: We believe that the Bible, including both the Old and New Testaments, is the only infallible and divinely inspired word of God. (Article 5 Belgic Confession) (2 Tim. 3:16)
Trinity: We believe in one sovereign God who exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are equal in attributes, nature, and deity and thus worthy of equal honor. (Article 1 & 8: Belgic Confession; Nicene Creed, 2 Cor. 13:14)
God the Father: We believe that God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth, is the source of everything that exists. He upholds, sustains and redeems all things according to his power and grace. (I Cor 8:6)
Jesus Christ: We believe in Jesus Christ, the one and only Son of God, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary. Thus, He is both fully God and fully human. He was crucified for the sins of the world and was buried. Christ rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. One day, He will return to earth to judge every person, living and dead. (John 3:16)
Holy Spirit: We believe in the person of the Holy Spirit, who is fully God. The Spirit points out sin and brings new birth to believers. We trust and rely on the power and presence of the Spirit to shape and conform the hearts, minds and wills of all to become more like Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:9)
Salvation: We believe that salvation is only found through Jesus Christ's death on the cross. He, and he alone, has paid for our sins. (Eph 2:8-9).
Sin: Although God created humankind in his image, humans chose to disobey God. Disobedience brought sin, death and judgment to all humankind. All humans are subject to God's righteous wrath and condemned to die, and thus in desperate need of the Savior. (Romans 5:12-13)
Creation: We believe God's word regarding creation and teach that God created everything out of nothing, giving all creatures their being, form, appearance, and functions for serving their Creator. God continues to sustain and rule all things in perfect wisdom and power. (Genesis 1-2, John 1, Article 12: Belgic Confession)
Sanctity of Life: We believe that all human life is created in the image of God and is therefore valuable and sacred from conception through death. As stewards of life, we are endowed by God with the responsibility to protect and defend the worth and dignity of human beings as determined by Scripture. (Psalm 139: 13-16, I Cor 12:12-31)
Marriage: We believe the Bible clearly teaches that God has ordained marriage and defined it as a covenant relationship between one biological man and one biological woman. (Gen 2:18-25)
Sexuality: God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a natural born man and a natural born woman who married each other. (1 Cor 6:18; 7:2-5; Heb 13:4) God commands no intimate sexual activity outside of a marriage. (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
Gender: We believe that from the beginning God created two separate and distinct biological sexes: male and female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. (Gen 1:26-27)
Heaven: God dwells in His heavenly realm as ruler of heaven and earth. Heaven is also the eternal home of God's angels and those who have been saved through Christ and have died.
The Church/Unity: We believe that placing faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior makes the believer part of the body of Christ, the one universal Church of which Jesus Christ is head. As an expression of the Church, the school works together in love and unity, worships together and disciples students, for the purpose of glorifying Christ. (Eph 2:14)
Confessions: The Heidelberg Catechism, Confession of Faith (Belgic Confession), Canons of Dordt, and the GHC Mission & Beliefs further express our traditional Reformed faith.

History
Our tradition of Christ-centered education dates back to 1880, when the school was founded to teach the Christian faith, the Dutch language, reading, writing, and arithmetic. The present location at the corner of Ferry and Grant was dedicated in 1953 as a kindergarten through ninth grade building. Today, as the longest continually operating member of Christian Schools International in the United States, Grand Haven Christian has over 450 preschool through eighth grade students from over 35 different churches.
